Communications Specialist
Job Purpose
The Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Alumni Relations. This position works across the Client’s Alumni Relations and NESA organizations, partnering with peers in the Client’s National Office of Membership Engagement, Development, and Marketing to support alumni engagement efforts that encourage and maintain brand and message consistency.
Job Summary
The primary responsibility of the Communications Specialist is to support alumni engagement communications by creating content and communications assets for volunteers, NESA members, and other alumni audiences while upholding brand standards.
This role involves working closely with various stakeholders to translate customer insights and current trends into clear, engaging communications, assist with membership materials, and contribute to consistent messaging across multiple media channels.
This position does not have formal team leadership responsibilities but collaborates closely with peers and managers to achieve communications goals.
Essential Functions

  • Collaborates with the Alumni Relations and Membership Engagement team and partners across Development, Marketing, and related departments.
  • Assists in translating customer insights and current trends into engaging communications that support engagement and recruitment goals.
  • Contributes to the creation and design of communications assets for alumni engagement, NESA recruitment, and social media campaigns.
  • Supports the development of alumni communications, including proposals, event materials, and marketing collateral.
  • Assists in compiling and organizing photo and video assets for use in alumni and NESA communications.
  • Works with marketing channel leaders to support engagement and recruitment visibility efforts.
  • Supports process improvement initiatives by assisting with workflow and communications enhancements.
  • Incorporates feedback and edits to ensure timely delivery of communications materials.
  • Coordinates with outside vendors and production partners to ensure on-brand, high-quality output under supervision.
  • Represents the Client’s National Office of Alumni Relations in a professional manner in collaborative efforts.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Job Competencies
Knowledge of
  • Writing and editing communications materials with attention to brand standards.
  • Basic graphic design tools and production processes; Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Branding, messaging, and tailoring communications for different audiences.
  • Social media content creation and basic web content editing.
Skill in
  • Creating visually appealing and accurate communications materials, including brochures, newsletters, presentations, and digital content.
  • Managing design files and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders on projects.
  • Writing and editing copy for various channels with clear, concise messaging.
Ability to
  • Manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Work collaboratively within a team and take direction from managers.
  • Follow brand guidelines closely to ensure consistency across all materials.
  • Communicate clearly and respond promptly to feedback.
  • Stay current with basic design and communication trends.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Level
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a brand, agency, or marketing copywriter/designer—ideally having spent time both in-house and on the brand side.
