Position Overview

Senior Accountant - Real Estate Development

Our Houston area client is looking for a Senior Accountant to join a lean, high-ownership accounting team. This role sits at the center of the business, supporting financial reporting, debt management, land transactions, and regulatory compliance across a portfolio of active development projects.

If you're a strong technical accountant who enjoys variety and wants to be close to the deal side of the business rather than buried in a corporate finance department, this is worth a look.

What You'll Do

Financial Reporting

  • Produce quarterly financial statements and internal reporting packages for leadership review
  • Maintain equity and debt schedules, including distribution waterfall modeling
  • Prepare reports for periodic investor and partnership meetings

Audit Support

  • Serve as the primary contact for external auditors, organizing and delivering supporting documentation
  • Coordinate with third-party engineers on development cost confirmations

Land and Lot Transactions

  • Review closing documents for accuracy prior to execution
  • Maintain land, lot, and inventory schedules throughout the project lifecycle
  • Verify tax pro-ration calculations on commercial closings

Accounts Receivable

  • Process incoming payments and provide accurate GL coding
  • Track builder and developer fee collections

Accounts Payable

  • Review vendor invoices and contractor pay applications for accuracy and approval
  • Manage multi-payment tracking and ensure timely processing at period close
  • Conduct periodic vendor statement reviews to catch billing discrepancies

Construction Loan Management

  • Prepare monthly draw packages for leadership approval
  • Compile and submit supporting documentation to lenders to keep funding on schedule

Special District Reimbursements

  • Maintain and reconcile reimbursement schedules for public infrastructure districts
  • Perform monthly reconciliation to the general ledger
  • Support district auditors with documentation requests

Property Taxes

  • Track annual property tax obligations and ensure timely payment
  • Calculate and process rollback tax assessments as they arise

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; MBA a plus
  • 5+ years of GAAP accounting experience; public accounting background preferred
  • Real estate or land development experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills and solid working knowledge of MS Office
  • Experience with job costing or project-based accounting software a plus
  • Comfortable working independently in a smaller team environment

Job Search Strategies for 2026: How to Get Hired in an AI-Driven Market

The job hunt no longer rewards effort. It rewards strategy. If you have applied to dozens of roles this year and heard nothing back, the problem probably is not you. The market itself has shifted. Recruiters now see more than 300 applications for a single opening, roughly triple what they saw five years ago. The […]

Is Your Compensation Package Actually Competitive in 2026?

The headline numbers look encouraging. Nominal wages rose 4.1% year-over-year through early 2026 while inflation ran at 2.4%, the first sustained period in several years where worker pay has technically outpaced rising prices. And yet 62% of employed Americans say their income has not kept up with their household expenses, according to a Bankrate survey […]

When the Algorithm Screens Out Your Best Hire

Roughly 43% of organizations worldwide used AI for HR and recruiting tasks in 2025, up from just 26% the year before. Hiring teams cite real efficiency gains: faster resume screening, reduced time on scheduling, and broader reach across candidate pools. […]
