How to Outshine AI Performance and Keep Your Job

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been front and center in the news lately, especially regarding its potential to transform the job market.   The two most popular artificial intelligence brainiacs, Bing AI, and ChatGPT, enlightened us on their versions of which occupations a cybernetic Armageddon could eventually obliterate.  Check to see if your job is at risk and whether you need to prepare to expand or enhance your skills and capabilities!

Jobs at risk

A new report from the McKinsey Global Institute predicts that up to 12 million US workers may have to change their occupations by 2030. The study examines the impact of automation and digitalization on the labor market and the skills required for the future of work.  We asked two of the most popular AI’s what their predictions were:

Bing’s AI told us that repetitive, routine, and rules-based tasks that don’t require much creativity or judgment, like data entry, customer service chatbots, online translations, etc., could be replaced in the next decade.

ChatGPT was more confident in its abilities and listed jobs with higher pay and skills requirements like data entry, customer and legal support, market research, inventory management, bookkeeping and accounting, administrative tasks, and data analysis.

But if you are in one of these roles, here’s the good news:  you can survive an AI workplace apocalypse!  By keeping an eye on robot intelligence and having a mindset of career lifelong learning, you’ll never be jobless in the Age of AI!

Essential Skills to Outsmart a Robot Colleague

Are you ready for the future of work?  AI is transforming how we work and live, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.  You must prepare yourself with the right skills and mindset to thrive in this new era.  Here are some tips on how you can do that:

1.  Develop Digital Skills: Technology is your friend, not your enemy.  Learn to love it and use it to your advantage.  Master the skills that will make you stand out in the digital world, such as software applications, data analysis, programming languages, and more.  These skills will help you adapt to any changes that AI brings.

2.  Cultivate Soft Skills:  AI may be smart, but it can’t replace the human touch.  Soft skills are essential for helping us achieve our goals, build trust and rapport, and adapt to different situations, so hone your problem-solving, communication, teamwork, adaptability, and emotional intelligence.  AI can’t collaborate with others, think critically, or express itself creatively in the moment.

3.  Pursue Lifelong Learning: Change is the only constant in life, especially in the age of AI.  Don’t get complacent or stuck in your comfort zone.  Keep learning new things and updating your skills.  Stay on top of industry trends, take online courses, attend workshops, and seek feedback.  It is true; learning is a lifelong journey, not a destination.

4.  Specialize in Complex Tasks: AI is great at doing simple and repetitive tasks but struggles with complex and creative ones.  That’s where you can shine.  Focus on developing your expertise in areas that require high-level cognitive abilities and creativity.  Be a leader in solving complex problems, thinking strategically, and making decisions.

5.  Embrace Collaboration with AI: AI is not your enemy or your competitor.  It’s your partner and your ally.  Learn to work with AI technologies and use them to enhance your work performance.  AI can help you automate tasks, gain insights, and perfect processes, leaving you more time for higher-value activities.  Just realize that AI makes mistakes.  Verify, verify, verify.

6.  Develop Cross-Disciplinary Skills: AI is not limited to one field or domain.  It’s everywhere, and it’s interdisciplinary.  That’s why you should broaden your horizons and learn about different fields that intersect with AI, such as data science, machine learning, human-computer interaction, or ethics and policy related to AI.

7.  Emphasize Creativity: AI may be able to mimic human creativity, but it can’t surpass it.  Creativity is what makes us human and what sets us apart from machines.  Use your imagination to generate innovative ideas, transform services, and develop solutions customers crave.  Creativity is the ultimate skill that will make you future-proof!

These are some of the ways you can prepare yourself for a future where AI plays an increasingly significant role in the workforce.  Don’t be afraid of AI; embrace it and use it to your benefit.  The future is bright and exciting if you are ready for it!
